Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program helps families pay rent in many different neighborhoods. The rental units are privately owned and may be single family houses or apartments in an apartment complex. Participant families include elderly persons, disabled persons and working families who do not earn enough to keep pace with rising rental housing costs.

Eligible applicants are responsible for finding their own rental unit of the appropriate size that meets the requirements of the program and pay a portion of their income toward rent. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), through the Battle Creek Housing Commission, pays the balance directly to the landlord by contract with the landlord.

The success of the program depends on our ability to contract with property managers, and owners who have decent, safe, and sanitary rental units. A Housing Quality Inspection will be conducted for all units before a Housing Assistance Payment Contract (HAP) may be entered into. Participation in an orientation program is required.

The Albion Section 8 waiting lists are currently CLOSED (No applications are being accepted at this time). If you completed a pre-application, you may check your Section 8 Waiting List Status on the waiting lists page.

The Battle Creek Section 8 waiting list is currently CLOSED. (No applications are being accepted at this time). The Battle Creek Housing Commission will not be opening the Section 8 waiting list in 2026. Due to the high volume of applications from our previous opening, we have sufficient applicants to fill projected voucher availability.
