Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program helps families pay rent in many different neighborhoods. The rental units are privately owned and may be single family houses or apartments in an apartment complex. Participant families include elderly persons, disabled persons and working families who do not earn enough to keep pace with rising rental housing costs.

Eligible applicants are responsible for finding their own rental unit of the appropriate size that meets the requirements of the program and pay a portion of their income toward rent. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), through the Battle Creek Housing Commission, pays the balance directly to the landlord by contract with the landlord.

The success of the program depends on our ability to contract with property managers, and owners who have decent, safe, and sanitary rental units. A Housing Quality Inspection will be conducted for all units before a Housing Assistance Payment Contract (HAP) may be entered into. Participation in an orientation program is required.

The Battle Creek Section 8 waiting list is currently CLOSED. (No applications are being accepted at this time). We anticipate it reopening approximately April 2025. If you completed a pre-application, you may check your Section 8 Waiting List status on the waiting lists page.

Only one pre-application per household will be accepted. Once you’ve successfully completed pre-screening application, you will receive a confirmation number. Using your social security number, you will be able to check your waiting list status after September 16, 2024 using the “Waiting List” tab at the top of the screen then selecting the “Waiting List Status” tab.

Once the pre-application period is over, the housing commission will draw 150 names by random, computerized lottery to be placed on the Albion Waiting List. Applicants who are placed on the Waiting List will have their “Waiting List Status” changed to “Selected” and will be mailed an application with further instructions. Applicants who are not placed on the waiting list will have their status changed to “Not Selected”. They will not be contacted by the housing commission.

Getting on the list does not guarantee that a family will receive a voucher. Applicants must meet income and eligibility requirements to get the voucher once their name comes up.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old by September 9, 2024. If an applicant owes money to the Battle Creek Housing Commission or to another public housing authority, those monies must be paid in full before October 18, 2024 or the applicant will not be eligible for voucher assistance.
