Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program helps families pay rent in many different neighborhoods. The rental units are privately owned and may be single family houses or apartments in an apartment complex. Participant families include elderly persons, disabled persons and working families who do not earn enough to keep pace with rising rental housing costs.

Eligible applicants are responsible for finding their own rental unit of the appropriate size that meets the requirements of the program and pay a portion of their income toward rent. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), through the Battle Creek Housing Commission, pays the balance directly to the landlord by contract with the landlord.

The success of the program depends on our ability to contract with property managers, and owners who have decent, safe, and sanitary rental units. A Housing Quality Inspection will be conducted for all units before a Housing Assistance Payment Contract (HAP) may be entered into. Participation in an orientation program is required.

Waiting Lists

The Battle Creek Section 8 waiting list is currently CLOSED. It will be open to applicants from April 10, 2023 at 8:01 am (EDT) through April 14, 2023 at 2:59 pm (EDT).

The Albion Section 8 waiting list is currently CLOSED. (No applications are being accepted at this time). We anticipate it reopening approximately August 2023. If you completed a pre-application, you may check your Section 8 Waiting List status on the waiting lists page.

Once the pre-application period is over, the Housing Commission will draw 100 names by random, computerized lottery to be placed on the waiting list, their status will be changed to "Selected" and they will be mailed futher instructions. Applicants who are not placed on the waiting list will have their status changed to "Not Selected". They will NOT be contacted by the Housing Commission.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old by April 14, 2023. If an applicant owes money to the Battle Creek Housing Commission or to another Public Housing Authority, those monies MUST be paid in full before May 14, 2023 or the application will not be eligible for voucher assistance.
